It could have been worse.

PHOENIX - One is looking to finally carve out a niche in the majors; one is hoping to reestablish himself at the big league level. Arizona Cardinals Jerseys . Kyle Drabek and Ricky Romero are back with the Blue Jays and as the club plays out the string of September games, the two have much to prove but no guarantees of the opportunities theyll get. “Theyll pitch,” said manager John Gibbons. “Were not sure exactly what role theyre going to be in. Ricky just threw Sunday so hes off a few more days anyway. Drabek threw, I think it was Friday, so he wouldnt be available to throw until tomorrow anyway. Weve got plenty of arms down there now.” The Jays have committed to keeping Mark Buehrle, R.A. Dickey and J.A. Happ on a regular schedule and with three off days between now and the remainder of the season, opportunities to start will be few. Dont forget, too, that Todd Redmond and Esmil Rogers continue to make their respective cases for regular turns. On merit, Redmond has earned the right to remain in the rotation for the rest of the season. Romeros recall comes after a second consecutive down season, this one with Triple-A Buffalo. He posted a 5.78 ERA over 22 starts and averaged five walks per nine innings. His only two appearances with the Blue Jays were in May, both were losses and neither was pretty. “Just go out there and compete and do what I know how to do,” said Romero of his recall. “Thats go out there and get outs and just end on a good note. I think thats the biggest thing, just getting another opportunity and just take advantage of it.” Romero leaned on Bisons pitching coach Bob Stanley for advice throughout the season. Stanley, remember, was on the mound for the infamous Bill Buckner error in the 1986 World Series. He knows a thing or two about facing adversity. “I think, I mean a lot of the things that Ive overcome is just the mental part of the game,” said Romero. “Early on I think that was kind of kicking my butt. Little by little I overcame it. It was tough to see those little victories along the way.” Drabek has recovered from a second Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery. Perhaps Drabeks most impressive statistic, in 14 minor league appearances at three levels, is his six walks in 43 innings of work. “For me, personally, I think its just mechanic wise, adding a little bit of turn that I had in high school and what the Jays wanted me to do,” said Drabek of his improved control. “I think it just has, its more comfortable for me on the mound with each pitch.” Like Romero, Drabek has battled emotional demons. There were times in 2011 and 2012, prior to the injury, when Drabek battled to control his pitches and his emotions. He thinks he changed during his injury. “Definitely learned more about myself and the game,” said Drabek. “I think, also, I grew up baseball wise. I started to figure out things that either I was or wasnt doing before surgery and I think its helped.” 40-MAN ROSTER ADJUSTMENTS Of the five players who joined the Blue Jays on Tuesday, only Kyle Drabek was on the 40-man roster. Space had to be made for Ricky Romero, Luis Perez, Jeremy Jeffress and Mike Nickeas. The club had one spot available and so to open another three spots, Melky Cabrera (knee) and Josh Johnson (forearm) were transferred to the 60-day disabled list and the club designated for assignment outfielder Mauro Gomez (.249/.322/.521, 29 HR with Triple-A Buffalo.) SANTOS FIRST MAJOR LEAGUE AT BAT In the eighth inning of Mondays game, Sergio Santos had his first career major league at bat and first professional at bat since 2009. The former shortstop turned pitcher saw two sinking fastballs, which clocked 89 and 90 miles per hour, from Diamondbacks starter Brandon McCarthy. They seemed faster to a guy who hadnt hit in four years. “Like a zillion miles an hour, no doubt about it,” said Santos. “It was pretty much almost surreal. It was a fun feeling, I mean it was good. Im just hoping I can get another one.” He used Mark DeRosas batting helmet and a bat belonging to Melky Cabrera. Santos grounded out to Diamondbacks third baseman Eric Chavez. Josh Mauro Jersey . Samir Nasris 88th-minute equalizer at Etihad Stadium will be of little consolation to City, which is now six points behind league leader Liverpool and four points behind second-place Chelsea. Third-place City has a game in hand but the surprise result against Sunderland, coupled with Sundays 3-2 loss at Liverpool, may be a setback too far in its bid for a second championship in three seasons. Larry Fitzgerald Jersey . According to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger, the Maple Leafs have trade offers on the table for the 26-year-old, but none have been deemed acceptable by the team. http://www.thecardinalsshoponline.com/t-j-logan-cardinals-jersey-44/ . PETERSBURG, Fla.OAKLAND, Calif. -- Coco Crisp drove in Kyle Blanks with a two-out single in the eighth inning and the Oakland Athletics beat the Boston Red Sox 4-3 on Friday night. Josh Donaldson hit a three-run home run, his first in two weeks, to help the As extend their winning streak to four games. Oakland also owns the best record in the majors. Boston reliever Andrew Miller (2-5) hit Blanks and Alberto Callaspo with back-to-back pitches with one out in the eighth. After Nick Punto struck out looking, Crisp lined a 2-2 pitch to right and Blanks easily scored ahead of the throw from Brock Holt. Sean Doolittle pitched the ninth for his 10th save. The As closer also extended his scoreless streak to 23 1/3 innings, the longest active mark in the AL. Oakland only managed two hits off Boston starter Felix Doubront and had stranded eight runners before Crisp delivered the game-winner. Fernando Abad (2-2) pitched one inning for the win. The As have won the first two of this series after dropping two of three to the Red Sox at Fenway Park last month. Crisp entered the game as a pinch-hitter in the seventh and struck out against reliever Burke Badenhop. Both teams squandered multiple scoring opportunities. The Red Sox left two on in the fourth and failed to score after loading the bases in the fifth. The As had two on in the third, fourth and seventh but stranded them each time. Oakland starter Brad Mills struck out the side in the first before Boston loaded the bases with one out in the second following an error by Oakland second baseman Puntto. Brandon Williams Jersey. . Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a two-run single to drive in Mike Napoli and Jonny Gomes. It could have been worse. As centre fielder Craig Gentry made a diving catch on Holts sinking liner, then threw to second to double off Stephen Drew. Boston tied it on David Ortizs RBI single in the third. Mills, acquired in a trade from Milwaukee earlier in the week, had not pitched in the majors since 2012. He walked four and struck out four before leaving after pitching out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth. Donaldsons three-run homer off Doubront in the first was his first since June 6. Doubront didnt allow another hit after that but left without a decision. He struck out four and walked four over 4 2-3 innings. NOTES: Oakland C Derek Norris left the game in the sixth after getting hit by a bat on his left forearm during Craig Holts at-bat. ... Craig Gentry reached base in the third inning after getting hit by a pitch. The play had to be reviewed by the umpires before being upheld. ... RHP Clay Buchholz (hyperextended knee) rejoined the big league club after making his second rehab appearance. Manager John Farrell has not set a date for Buchholz to return to the rotation, but it seems likely hell start Wednesday in Seattle. ... Oakland optioned RHP Evan Scribner to Triple-A Sacramento to make room for Mills. ... RHP Jesse Chavez (6-4), who was pushed back a day in the rotation to make room for Mills, pitches on Saturday. ... Boston RHP Rubby De La Rosa (2-2) makes his first career start against the As.
